A LA-ICP-MS U-(Th-)Pb Network workshop will be held at Goldschmidt 2015 in Prague (15th & 16th August).
After a workshop of the Network in Charleston 2013, a comparison exercise was initiated examining the impact on laser ablation U-Pb age results, of different data reduction procedures in different data processing packages. In addition, a reference set of zircons was put together to allow labs to demonstrate their long term validation. The preliminary results of these exercises will be shown and described with conclusions as to improvements that could be made.
Recent papers have described the effect of annealing, chemical abrasion and/or the ablation rate, on systematic biases in LA U-Pb dating of zircon. This identifies a potentially critical improvement in accuracy for LA geochronology. Interest in dating of non-zircon, common-Pb containing accessory phases has also grown, requiring correction and critically, appropriate uncertainty propagation. The relative merits of the different approaches to standardisation, common-Pb correction and uncertainty propagation will be discussed with a view to generating community-derived recommendations on better practice.
We hope that you will attend the workshop (registration is through the Goldschmidt website) and give your input to these discussions. We look forward to seeing you there.
